Northeast Texas Community College student Tonya Hammonds, of Pittsburg, recently received the Walter B Cooper Scholarship at the Phi Theta Kappa Texas Leadership Conference. The conference, held on the campus of Grayson College, concluded by announcing just five winners from across the entire state of Texas. The Walter B Cooper Scholarship recognizes outstanding students who are “well-rounded” in the four Hallmarks of Phi Theta Kappa: Scholarship, Leadership, Service and Fellowship.

Nine members of Alpha Mu Chi, Northeast Texas Community College’s chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, attended the Texas Leadership Conference held at Grayson College on October 11-13. Attendees included Courtney Baldwin, Tonya Hammonds, Jacqueline Fouche’, Katelyn Kimbrough, Mercedes Collins, Halley Goodwin, Tranequea Hammons, and Brent Garrett. Jacob Lambie, as the District III Vice-President, helped plan and lead the event which had as its theme “A Changing World: Crafting Global Leaders.”

“Outside the Lines” is an art show about mental health and identity. Fifty pieces of artwork are on display in the Whatley Foyer all this week. A “reaction box” allows you to comment on and identify with pieces that resonate with you in some way. Franklin Cruz, a TEDx speaker, will be part of the closing reception activities on Friday, November 1, 5-7 pm, which includes a chocolate fountain, snack foods, and a silent auction on some of the artwork.

Both the Women’s and Men’s Soccer teams for Northeast Texas Community College have qualified for post-season play starting this weekend.

The Northeast Texas Community College Rodeo team hosted the third NIRA Southern Region Rodeo of the 2019-2020 season this past weekend at the Elite Western Arena in Mount Pleasant, Texas. 

Coach Skylar Hunnicutt and Assistant Coach Garrett Poston’s hard work in preparation for the event, along with a great facility at Elite Western Arena made for a great weekend of Rodeo.

The Texas A&M University – Commerce Mathematics Advisory Council recently met at the Alumni Center on the university campus for their scheduled fall meeting.  This is the second year for the council of eleven invited members from community colleges and public schools to serve the TAMU – Commerce Department of Mathematics in this capacity.  Council members join with the mathematics faculty and administration to discuss suggestions and ideas for recruitment, undergraduate research, outreach activities, and other areas of service by the department.

Richard and Margaret Perryman recently gave $3,000 to sponsor the annual Northeast Texas Community College Foundation Scholarship Brunch. The event is held each fall to honor scholarship donors and recipients and allow them to meet each other.

This year’s Annual NTCC Talent Show will be hosted by the Student Government Association on Thursday, November 7, 2019 in the Whatley Center from 7:00 p.m.-?

For the second year in a row, NTCC sophomore Presidential Scholars comprised their own panel at a professional scholarly meeting.  At the annual fall gathering of the East Texas Historical Association, held in Nacogdoches, 10-12 October, NTCC scholars Mercedes Collins, Jacob Lambie, Verania Leyva Garcia, and Miguel Paco composed the whole of session 11, “Race, Rights, and the University of Texas in an Era of Transition.”

The "Outside the Lines" Art Show will be held on Monday, October 28 - Friday, November 1 at the NTCC Whatley Foyer. Some of the art pieces will be up in a silent auction held during the week. One hundred percent of the proceeds will be donated to organizations dedicated to the cause - bringing awareness to the struggles associated with mental illnesses, broadly defined: including anxiety, depression, and the autism spectrum and to show how art can be used for both therapeutic and expressive purposes in the crafting of personal identity. Come on out and enjoy the many impressive pieces and show your support!
