Operator Program

The NTCC cosmetology operator program is a 9-month 1000 Hour certificate program, which includes fall and spring semester, August-May. This program is approved and monitored by Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation, and meets all criteria for a Texas Cosmetology Operator Licensure upon full completion and credit of the courses and state board examinations. Students will attend face-to-face classes as well as participate in online training through blackboard and MindTap.

Course options:

NTCC offers the cosmetology operator program as both a certificate program, or an Associate of Applied Science of Cosmetology Degree.

All Cosmetology students will complete the Operator Certificate Program first. The AAS of Cosmetology includes the Operator Certificate courses, combined with other academic courses and can be completed after successful completion of the Certificate.

Course Requirements:

Students who wish to enter the cosmetology operator program must be at least 17 years of age, have a high school diploma, GED or valid equivalency of high school education.

Course Content:

The program is designed to train students in all aspects of cosmetology, as laid out by TDLR, under the “scope of practice” for cosmetology operators. This includes (but is not limited to) training in hair cutting and styling, haircoloring, chemical texture services, manicuring, pedicuring, artificial nails, facials, and skin care. (insert course module here? List of classes, credit hours, etc)

Hybrid Course Info:

Cosmetology is a hybrid course, meaning it operates partially online. Our licensing agency, TDLR, allows students to complete 25% of their coursework online, along with the face-to-face classes. Cosmetology uses a digital learning platform called MindTap for delivery of the online coursework. Students are required to clock a certain amount of time online each week in their MindTap course online.

Schedule of Classes:

Cosmetology class is Monday through Thursday, 8:00am – 3:15pm, with a 1-hour lunch break. This class schedule runs through both fall and spring semester. (Class schedule is subject to change).

Students are also responsible for completing roughly 10 hours of online work each week as well as the face-to-face classes. Students complete online work on their own time, not during scheduled class time.

Entry to the Program:

The NTCC Cosmetology program enrolls 46 new students each Fall semester. Due to having limited seats available, students must complete a Cosmetology application packet and pay a $200 deposit in order to secure their spot in the program. Once the completed packet and deposit is received by our department, the student is guaranteed a spot in the program and will be enrolled for the following fall semester courses. (Deposit is refunded upon graduation). Cosmetology application packets will be made available to the public on February 1st of each year for that year’s fall class. Applications can be picked up from the cosmetology department or can be sent to students via email if requested. Applications can be submitted as early as March 1st in order to secure a spot in the program. It is recommended to get the application in early, as the program is typically full by mid-summer.

Please note: The Cosmetology Application should be completed only AFTER a student has completed the NTCC Admissions Application; these are two separate applications.

Completed Cosmetology application packets must be brought in to the Cosmetology department on the NTCC Campus (including all required documents and deposit) in order to be considered for the program. The Cosmetology Department is located in the Business Technology Building, BT 102. When students bring in their completed packets they will have a quick interview (conversation/chat) with instructors. If you live a distance from the campus and cannot return the packet in person, please reach out to us via email so other arrangements can be made. For all Cosmetology related questions and inquiries, please reach out to our department directly via the information below.
