Changes to Federal Direct Loan Eligibility Beginning July 1, 2026
Beginning with the 2026–2027 academic year, federal law requires colleges to determine Federal Direct Loan eligibility based on a student's enrollment level.
Beginning with the Fall 2026 semester:
- Students must be enrolled full-time (12 or more credit hours) to receive their full annual Federal Direct Loan eligibility.
- Loan eligibility is reduced for each credit hour below full-time enrollment.
- Students enrolled in fewer than 6 credit hours are not eligible for Federal Direct Loans.
If your enrollment changes after your loan has been awarded, such as dropping or withdrawing from classes, your remaining loan eligibility may be reduced before future disbursements are made.
If you stop attending a class and receive a failing grade because you did not complete the course, your remaining loan eligibility may also be affected.
Before making changes to your class schedule, contact the NTCC Financial Aid Office to discuss how your financial aid may be affected.
Part-Time Enrollment and Loan Eligibility
Beginning with the 2026–2027 academic year, Federal Direct Loans must be reduced for students enrolled less than full-time. Loan eligibility is calculated proportionally based on enrolled credit hours.
Students must still be enrolled at least half-time (6 credit hours) to receive a Federal Direct Loan disbursement.
An undergraduate student is generally considered full-time when enrolled in 12 or more credit hours during a semester. A student enrolled full-time for one semester is eligible to receive up to 50% of their annual loan limit during that semester. Students enrolled less than full-time receive a proportionally reduced amount.
| Enrolled Credit Hours (Per Semester) | Percentage of Annual Loan Limit |
|---|---|
| 12 or more | 50.00% |
| 11 | 45.83% |
| 10 | 41.67% |
| 9 | 37.50% |
| 8 | 33.33% |
| 7 | 29.17% |
| 6 | 25.00% |
| 1–5 | Not eligible |
