Honors Northeast scholars win awards for Texas history essays

For the third year in a row, Honors Northeast scholars from Northeast Texas Community College have won two of the four lower-division awards for scholarship in Texas History at the annual state-wide Walter Webb Society meeting.† William Fox of Mount Pleasant won second place in the essay competition, winning $300, and Rachel Jordan of Ore City, won fourth place and $75.† The Walter Webb Society is the collegiate auxiliary of the Texas State Historical Association which also met in Houston.

Honors Northeast takes spring trip to Dallas

Students and faculty in the Honors Program at Northeast Texas Community College recently participated in their Spring 2017 Honors Trip. The group traveled to Dallas, where they visited North Park Center, the Perot Museum, the Nasher Sclupture Center, Fuddrucker?s Restaurant and the Granville Theatre in Garland to see a performance of Tantalus. This is the 20th semester trip the group has taken since 2008.

Honors Northeast plans original film premiere

Honors Northeast, the honors program at Northeast Texas Community College, will premiere an original historical film Friday, Feb. 17 at 7 p.m. in the Whatley Center for the Performing Arts. The production, Sam Houston and the Fate of the Texas Cherokee, is the fifth film Honors Northeast has completed in the last five years.

Update: Three NTCC students named Jack Kent Cooke semifinalists

Northeast Texas Community College learned last week that three sophomore students have been named semifinalists for the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation Undergraduate Transfer Scholarship. Ryan-Rose Mendoza, Melody Mott and Bailey Hall, all of Mount Pleasant, are among those who will move into the final stages of the highly-competitive competition.

Their applications were among more than 2,800 submitted by students across the nation. Only 20% of applicants made it to semifinalist status.
