John Gregory Rodriguez, of Mount Pleasant, has become the 2021 Texas Heritage National Bank (THNB) Scholar of Northeast Texas Community College. This $4,000 scholarship goes to a top Presidential Scholar of the NTCC Honors Program. Rodriguez, will inherit this prestigious designation from other previous vanguard students of NTCC such as Jordan Whelchel, who went on to Rice University; and Emmalea Shaw, now working on her doctorate in physical therapy at the North Texas State medical campus in Fort Worth.
The Northeast Texas Community College baseball team hit the field this past week to start fall baseball practices and wasted no time in getting involved in the community. The City of Mount Pleasant held a Cinco de Mayo festival downtown on Saturday, August 28th since the original festival was canceled in the spring due to COVID restrictions.

NTCC Presidential Scholar, Aaliyah Avellaneda, has won the fourth Dr. Jerry Wesson Scholarship, for academic excellence in honors. This year the award increased from $500 to $750. This honor was established in 2018 by Scott Wesson, a Senior Vice President of UDR, an owner of 50,000 exclusive apartment units throughout the United States. The award commemorates his father-- long-term NTCC Vice President, and supporter, Dr. Jerry Wesson.
The NTCC EatBetter4Less program and History Departments will co-host “The Journey from African Medicine to Soul Food & Food Tasting” with guest speaker Chef Kami Redd on Monday, Sept. 20 at 12:30 p.m. in Humanities 101 (community room). Redd is an herbalist, nutritionist and author who will take participants on a culinary journey from traditional African medicine to comforting African-American Soul Food. She will also explain how comfort can be utilized for healing. The event is free to attend.
The Northeast Texas Community College Soccer teams hosted Blinn Junior College on Saturday in the 2021 Conference opener. The NTCC Women would start the season off with a 2-1 victory over the Buccaneers, while the Men’s team from NTCC eared a 1-0 victory over Blinn.
Northeast Texas Community College Athletics is pleased to announce the hiring of Ross Davis as Assistant Baseball Coach. Coach Davis will primarily work with pitchers and catchers for the Eagles.
Alpha Mu Chi, NTCC’s chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, received a grant for the second year from the Mellon Foundation to help fund their Honors in Action project.
Northeast Texas Community College Athletics is pleased to announce the hiring of new assistant softball coach Mikayla Krause. Coach Krause recently graduated from McMurry University in Abilene, Texas with a Bachelor of Science in Interdisciplinary Studies.
The annual Northeast Texas Poetry Reading on Friday, September 3 at 11 AM will again occur at the Foyer of the Whatley Center for the Performing Arts on the Northeast Texas Community College campus. The public is invited for this free event, the fourteenth of its kind in as many years. This year, in addition to six readings of the highest ranked poems of the adult and student divisions, and a presentation of winning Northeast Texas images, two speakers will share their perceptions of our region.
