The Northeast Texas Community College Board of Trustees met for its regular June meeting on Tuesday, June 28.
During the President’s report, Dr. Ron Clinton acknowledged that NTCC was pleased to have two Jack Kent Cooke Foundation scholarship winners this year. In addition to Aaliyah Avellaneda winning the JKCF Undergraduate Transfer Scholarship, alumnus Brenda Godoy earned a second graduate school award. Avellaneda will receive up to $55,000 per year for a maximum of three years to complete her undergraduate degree. Godoy, who was a Presidential Scholar at NTCC from 2016-2018, received $150,000 to continue graduate-level work. She plans to attend medical school in Fort Worth this fall.
“To my knowledge, we are the only college that produced two Jack Kent Cooke scholarships this year. These young ladies have worked very hard to earn these honors and we know that they will represent NTCC well as they continue their studies,” Clinton said.
Dr. Jonathan McCullough, Executive Vice President for Advancement, gave a brief report on the summer Work4College program. According to McCullough, there are 95 participants in the program with 70 on the NTCC campus and the rest at various high schools in the area.
The Work4College students are part of a unique, privately-funded scholarship program that allows them to work part-time on campus. Half of their earned pay is distributed through a paycheck and the rest is banked into a scholarship fund that they can use to pay for future NTCC classes. Participants also take a class that teaches financial literacy, life skills and community service.
Ms. Amy Adkins, Executive Director of Human Resources, also gave a report on recent TASB updates affecting legal policies.
In action items, the board approved the consent agenda, approved two new faculty members, released one employee from their contract and extended the president’s contract. The new faculty members added were Alanta Knox in Biology and Erin Robles in Cosmetology.
A special budget meeting was held afterwards. No action was taken at the special meeting.
