Four named Semi-Finalists in Phi Theta Kappa Fall Common Scholarship Competition

Northeast Texas Community College students Mercedes Collins, Tonya Hammonds, Jacob Lambie, and Daniel Landaverde recently learned that they had been named semi-finalists for Phi Theta Kappa’s Fall Common Scholarship Competition. The Fall Common Scholarships include the All USA Community College Academic Team, Coca-Cola Scholars, Guistwhite, and Hites Scholarships.

“It’s a pleasure to see these four named as semi-finalists in this competition. It’s a testament to the work ethic and effort these students have put into making the most of their time in college, seizing the opportunities which have come their way, as well as their academic abilities,” said Dr. Melissa Fulgham, lead advisor for the Alpha Mu Chi chapter of Phi Theta Kappa.

Collins, a history major from Daingerfield, is a Presidential Honors Scholar, Gladys Winkle Memorial Scholar, Texas Heritage National Bank Scholar, the Dr. Mary Hood Scholar, and a recent Eckman Award winner. She plans to transfer to Grand Canyon University and major in public history. She serves as an Executive Officer for the Alpha Mu Chi chapter of Phi Theta Kappa.

Tonya Hammonds, a social work major from Pittsburg, is a Bonnie Spencer prize winner, the Dr. Mary Hood Texas Scholar, and Walter B. Cooper Scholar. She serves as an Executive Officer for the Alpha Mu Chi chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, president of the Social Work Club, and an officer for Psi Beta Psychology Honor Society and More Alike than Different. She plans to transfer to Texas A&M University-Commerce and become a Licensed Clinical Social Worker.

Jacob Lambie, a psychology major from Scroggins, serves as a Texas Regional Officer of Phi Theta Kappa (District III Vice-President), is a Presidential Honors Scholar, Pearson Scholar, Texas STAR Scholar, Caldwell Award winner, and Dr. Charles B. Florio Leadership Award recipient. He is the founder of More Alike than Different and also served as director for the upcoming Honors Film “Starlight.”

Daniel Landaverde, a business major from Mount Pleasant, is a Presidential Honors Scholar, Chitsey Award recipient, Caldwell Award winner, and a Coca-Cola Leader of Promise. Landaverde presented his award winning work on Mount Pleasant Hispanics at the National Collegiate Honors Council.
