The Northeast Texas Community College Culinary Arts Department and Learning Resource Center (LRC) recently hosted two events at NTCC Culinary Arts School in downtown Pittsburg. High schools from around the area came to show off their culinary skills in a Culinary Food Fight.†

Greenville, Sulphur Bluff, Hughes Springs, Prairiland, Chapel Hill, Pewitt, and Texas High high schools all participated. Events included Safety and Sanitation Trivia, Knife Skills Relay, and a main team breakfast challenge. Each team was given components that had to be incorporated into a complete breakfast. Points were awarded for creativity, presentation, and taste.†

Greenville High School took home first place overall, with Pewitt High School taking second and Chapel Hill High School, third. NTCC Culinary Arts instructors served as judges.

On the same day, the LRC oversaw the judging of the annual Edible Book competition. Participants are asked to create an edible interpretation of a favorite book. This can be a cake or some other dish ? so long as it is mostly edible. Judges for the†Edible Book Contest were Sebastian Barron, Austin Baker, Kathleen Miller-Hays, and Brenda Young.

?We did this when I was in college and it was a lot of fun,? Heather Shaw, Reference Librarian at NTCC said. ?We?ve had good response since I brought it to NTCC three years ago, but we?ve never had entries as big or elaborate as we saw this year.?

The cake voted Most Creative was ?The Bible: Tree of Life? by Hunter Alcorn of Hughes Springs. Second place went to ?Jumanji? by Tara Lockaby of Mount Pleasant.†Lockaby's†creation was also voted People?s Choice by attendees at the event. Local Third place was the ?Jungle Book? by Breanna Castillas of Hughes Springs.
