Carolina Alcocer-Salas, the president of NTCC’s award-winning chapter of Phi Theta Kappa (Alpha Mu Chi) and the secretary of the student council of Honors Northeast, has won the 2020 Dr. Charles B. Florio Award for Leadership. Alcocer-Salas will receive $200, given by an anonymous donor, in honor of Northeast Texas Community College’s longest-term president.

Alcocer-Salas has had a most memorable first semester experience at NTCC.  Since the beginning of the term she has won a national award, the Leader of Promise, a regional award, the Walter B. Cooper Texas Regional Scholarship, a $100 poetry award, and now, the Florio Award.

Dr. Charles Florio served as President of NTCC for 13 years, from 1995 to 2008.  During his tenure, enrollments, building, credentials of the faculty, and the stature of the college showed a steady increase.

“Alcocer-Salas was an extraordinary leader as well at Chapel Hill High School, and we are so thankful to have her in Honors and in NTCC,” noted Dr. Andrew Yox, Honors Director.  “She served as both a cinematographer and actress in our 2020 honors film on Bo Pilgrim, and is a steady contributor to our NTCC Student Government Association, and our campus newspaper, the Eagle.”
