Andrew Yox wins TSHA Leadership in Education Award

Dr. Andrew Yox, Northeast Texas Community College's Honors Director, recently reached a climactic moment of his †twenty-year career in Northeast Texas.

On March 4 in Irving, The Texas State Historical Association (TSHA) awarded Yox the Mary Jon and J.P. Bryan Leadership in Education Award, a citation that came with a $5,000 prize.† It is the top financial award granted each year by the TSHA, open to university and college educators in history throughout the state.

Angelica Fuentes receives Guistwhite Scholarship

Angelica Fuentes, a sophomore at Northeast Texas Community College, recently learned that she has received the prestigious 2016 Phi Theta Kappa Guistwhite Scholarship. Her†selection was based on the score she earned in the Guistwhite Scholarship Competition, for which over 1,800 applications were received. Fuentes is one of only 15 students selected for this honor internationally.





NTCC students named to 2016 Coca-Cola Community College Academic Team

Two Northeast Texas Community College students were recently named to the 2016 Coca-Cola College Academic Team. Isaac Burris was named a Coca-Cola Gold Scholar and Morgan Capps was named a Coca-Cola Gold Silver Scholar.†The Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation sponsors the Coca-Cola Community College Academic Team program by recognizing 50 Gold, 50 Silver and 50 Bronze Scholars, and providing nearly $200,000 in scholarships annually.

Honors Northeast accepting applications

The Honors Program of Northeast Texas Community College is accepting applications for the 2016-2017 school year. The deadline to apply is March 1. High School seniors in the top tenth of their class are welcome to apply, as well as NTCC students with a 3.5 GPA or higher. Honors Northeast combines challenging seminars of key core curricular classes, with opportunities for advanced mentoring, student travel, interscholastic competition, publications and community service.

Honors Northeast promotes scholars

The Northeast Texas Community College Honors Committee recently promoted Hector Zuniga, an NTCC sophomore from Mount Pleasant, from the title of Honors Scholar to Presidential Scholar. Zuniga won the citation for Academic Excellence in last fall?s Biotex Honors Seminar and has maintained a 4.0 GPA at NTCC.† The Biotex seminar is composed each fall of entering honors students, and Zuniga won the top rank.†Honors Northeast also admitted two additional Honors Scholars - Kassandra† Martinez and Ryan-Rose Mendoza.

Honors Northeast attends NCHC meeting in Chicago

Five sophomore Northeast Texas Community College Honors students, in addition to Honors professors Dr. Mary Hearron and Dr. Andrew Yox,†recently†represented NTCC at the 50th Anniversary meeting of the National Collegiate Honors Council (NCHC) in Chicago. The NCHC is the premier association of honors programs and honors colleges in the nation. NTCC is the only community college to have featured scholarly student presenters at the yearly NCHC continuously since 2008.

NCHC committees select proposals to present on the basis of appeal, previous awards, and scholarly promise.
