Alpha Mu Chi, the Northeast†Texas Community College chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, was recently honored at the Jenzabar Annual Meeting at the Gaylord Texan in Grapevine. The NTCC chapter was one of only seven groups†recognized at†the meeting†who received the Student Leadership Award,†given out each year by the Jenzabar Foundation. The award came with a $5,000 grant and the club was invited†to be part of a poster presentation at the meeting to showcase its efforts and activities.†

In addition to the afternoon poster exhibition, the chapter also gave a brief presentation to the trustees and board members of the Jenzabar Foundation at a special VIP reception that evening. NTCC employees attending the Jenzabar Annual Meeting were also invited to the VIP reception as a result of the chapter?s award-winning designation. Representing the chapter at the reception were members Scott Wilhite, Mary Smith, Ryan-Rose Mendoza, and advisor Dr. Melissa Fulgham. Chapter representatives received an all-expense paid trip to the Gaylord, including overnight accommodation, in order to be able to share the story of the chapter?s activities and its goals.

?It was definitely an honor to be recognized for the work we do as a chapter. †The Jenzabar Foundation?s award and ceremony was very sincere and appreciated and, as any recognition like that does, it reminds you that the things that matter the most, like giving to the community, are worthy causes and somebody is noticing,? Scott Wilhite, who served as Vice President of Service for Alpha Mu Chi, said. "Because NTCC is a two year school, it makes it harder to coordinate and corral students around a project like this that universities don?t think about.† Alpha Mu Chi is very fortunate to have an academic advisor like Dr. Fulgham who puts so much effort into keeping everyone engaged and feeling welcome. Because of that, we?re able to make an impact in the local communities by volunteering for service related work.† Not to mention the help it provides the less fortunate.?

The Jenzabar Foundation?s Student Leadership Awards is an annual competition that recognizes student-led campus groups and projects that have made a significant contribution to better the world outside of their institutions of higher education.

The Student Leadership Award recipients have exemplified a commitment to making a difference in the world either through ongoing activities or through the completion of a project during their academic year. Award recipients are honored at Jenzabar Foundation events taking place across the country, starting with a ceremony during Jenzabar?s Annual Meeting (JAM). Each Student Leadership Award winner receives a grant to continue their work.
