Northeast Texas Community College is now accepting applications for a Personal Training Certification program designed by and instructed by Dr. Tom Seabourne, NTCC Professor of Physical Education. Classes begin September 21 and run through October 23.
This 15-hour course is a comprehensive, research-based program†designed to provide students with all of the skills required to become a personal trainer. Participants will learn cutting-edge information about exercise science, flexibility, resistance training,†nutrition, mind/body exercises and cardio workouts. Additionally, students will experience sports performance†enhancement drills and program development techniques.†To become a Certified Personal Trainer, you must receive a passing score on the written and practical exam†following the course of study.
"I am very proud of the program we have put together. This course will provide those interested in pursuing a career as a personal trainer with an entry level credential to help them become marketable to potential clients and employers," Seabourne, who is certified by the American College of Sports Medicine, American Council on Exercise and is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist through the National Strength and Conditioning Association, said.
The program is completely flexible, as students can choose to complete the class in a face-to-face or online setting. Students will have access to comprehensive learning materials in addition to having 24/7 access to the state-of-the-art fitness center on the NTCC main campus. The face-to-face option will meet on Mondays and Wednesdays from 1:00-2:30 p.m. in the Fitness Center. Included materials include a 200-page PT Study Guide (PDF Format), hundreds of hands-on videos and access to a comprehensive NTCC fitness website with presentations, audio recordings, blogs, etc.
In addition to teaching, Seabourne is a nationally known fitness expert who has published numerous books on exercise science. He is an avid cyclist who has competed in ultra endurance races and has held national titles in Taekwando. He was named a Piper Professor in 2014, which is one of the highest honors a college faculty member in the state of Texas can receive.
