Dr. Melissa Weinbrenner,†Northeast Texas Community College history professor and Phi Theta Kappa advisor, has been chosen to serve as a Phi Theta Kappa 2013 Faculty Scholar. Only 25 community college instructors were selected from among nearly 3,000 chapter advisors to serve in this role. The scholars were selected through a rigorous application†process based on knowledge of the 2012-2013 Honors Study Topic, "The Culture of Competition," and demonstrated excellence in teaching or administration. This is Weinbrenner's second consecutive year to be selected for this honor.†
"We congratulate them for being selected to serve and for their willingness and desire to surpass the traditional duties of an advisor by contributing in this manner," said Susan Edwards, Phi Theta Kappa's Dean of Academic Affairs and Honors Programs.†
The group attended the annual Faculty Scholar Conference at Phi Theta Kappa's Center for Excellence in Jackson, Mississippi in February. Weinbrenner, along with her Faculty Scholar colleagues, will serve as facilitators during Phi Theta Kappa's Honors Institute, which will be held at Villanova University in Pennsylvania in June.
?The International Honors Institute is a one-of-kind event that features world class speakers and serving as a facilitator at Villanova is an exciting opportunity. †I especially enjoy serving as a Faculty Scholar as it gives me, and all those able to attend, the chance to meet and talk with intriguing and impactful people like Temple Grandin, Carlotta Wells and Bill Rancic," Weinbrenner said.
The NTCC Phi Theta Kappa Alpha Mu Chi chapter recently won 19 awards at the Texas Regional Convention in Fort Worth. These awards included Weinbrenner being selected for the Texas Region Advisor Hall of Honor.†
"I†feel very honored to serve in the Faculty Scholar role. This gives me the opportunity to spend time with other advisors and bring back new ideas to our local Phi Theta Kappa chapter," Weinbrenner said. "I†am so proud of the accomplishments of our students.†I†see this as a means to grow as a leader and to bring†attention†to our chapter on a national stage."
