A recent national study highlighting the long-term success of Communities in Schools programs is shining a spotlight on the life-changing work being done locally through Communities in Schools of Northeast Texas.
CIS of Northeast Texas serves more than 3,800 students in 13 school districts across 12 counties and is uniquely connected to Northeast Texas Community College. It employs almost 50 full and part-time campus coordinators and support staff. CIS of Northeast Texas is the only Communities in Schools affiliate in the nation administered through a community college.
A recent national economic mobility study conducted by researchers with Opportunity Insights and the EdRedesign Lab at Harvard University highlighted the effectiveness of the Communities in Schools model nationwide. The study found that CIS significantly improves both short-term academic success and long-term economic outcomes for students.
Locally, CIS of Northeast Texas is making a measurable impact through outcomes in case-managed students:
- 100% showed basic need improvement
- 100% of 12th grade students graduated or received a GED
- 100% stayed in school
- 99.19% promoted to the next grade
Nationwide, the study found that students who participated in CIS programs experienced:
- A 5.2% increase in graduation rates
- A 9.1% increase in two-year college enrollment
- More than $75,000 in additional lifetime earnings
“Programs like Communities in Schools are incredibly valuable to both our community and our college,” said Kim Irvin, Vice President for Student Services at NTCC. “When students are supported academically, socially, and emotionally, they are more likely to stay engaged in school, graduate, and pursue meaningful careers. We are proud to support a program that is creating opportunities and changing lives across Northeast Texas.”
Through partnerships with local school districts, businesses, nonprofits, and community organizations, CIS of Northeast Texas continues to strengthen schools, support families, and expand opportunities for students throughout the region. To learn more, visit NTCC.edu/CIS.
