The STEM Lunch and Learn meeting Tuesday, April 15, witnessed a “standing room only” crowd as approximately 95 students, faculty, and administrators attended the presentations given by three NTCC students and an NTCC biology professor.
Presenting research conducted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for BIOL 2389, Academic Cooperative in the Biological Sciences, Gracie Gray, Stephanie Hernandez, and Isabel Tresidder shared their findings while Dr. Chris McAllister provided an overview of the course, including the research component.
The student presentations were titled as follows:
Gracie Gray
Title: “Henneguya sp. (Cnidaria: Myxosporea: Myxobolidae) from the Gill of Black Bullhead, Ameiurus melas (Siluriformes: Ictaluridae), from the White River Drainage of Northeastern Arkansas”
Stephanie Hernandez
Title: “Myxobolus spp. (Cnidaria: Myxosporea: Myxobolidae) of the Black Buffalo, Ictiobus niger (Cypriniformes: Catostomidae) from the White River Drainage of Northeastern Arkansas”
Isabel Tresidder
Title: “Helminth and Arthropod Parasites of Baird’s Pocket Gopher, Geomys breviceps (Rodentia: Geomyidae), from Northeastern Texas”
Having just returned from presenting their work at the Southwestern Association of Parasitologists in Kingston, Oklahoma, these students reported several novel finds that will eventually be published.
The next STEM Lunch and Learn is set for Monday, April 28, from 12:30 to 1:30, in the Whatley Foyer. The guest speaker will be Dr. Paul Boothe, Research and Development Manager with Arkema, Inc. in Pennsylvania. The title of Dr. Boothe’s presentation is Polymers and Composites for Advanced Materials. Dr. Boothe is actively engaged in the application of chemistry in emerging technologies and his presentation is sure to be informative to all. Please join us.
