Those interested in learning more about cutting-edge issues relating to the history of Texas are welcome to a free Lunch & Learn at the Mount Pleasant Public Library, 601 North Madison, Friday, 7 February, 12:15-1:15 p.m.
A sequence of four presentations—all relating to our modern, regional history--will occur in the library’s community room, with free pizza, salad, drinks, and dessert to all who RSVP with Dr. Andrew Yox at ayox@ntcc.edu by 5 p.m. on Thursday, 6 February.
The donors of Honors Northeast, the honors program at NTCC, have again made this Lunch & Learn possible. This will be the sixth annual session of the series.
The NTCC scholars who will present have all been accepted for other presentation venues this spring in Houston, and/or Denton, Texas. All four have already won cash awards for their research. The presenters and topics include: Araceli Landaverde, whose history of Hispanic Catholics at St. Michael’s in Mount Pleasant challenges the dominant interpretation of this topic on the state level, Católicos, by Mario T. Garcia; Stephanie Hernandez, who will offer the premiere history of Tejano murals; Mary-Faith Wilson who will offer an inside account of how literary figures such as Elmer Kelton, and Larry McMurtry have helped to maintain the cowboy culture in Texas; and Yahir Garcia, this year’s film editor of Honors, who will introduce the film, Crude Conquest: Toxification and the Triumph of Big Oil in Texas Politics, 1935-1980, which will premiere at NTCC later this spring.
Guests are welcome to ask questions and participate in the discussions at the conclusion of each presentation. Anyone with dietary issues, or questions about the event are welcome to write Dr. Yox using the email above.
