Work4College holds annual luncheon

Northeast Texas Community College held its annual Work4College Scholarship lunch on Wednesday, Aug. 3 on the NTCC campus. The event, which brought together more than 200 students, supervisors and donors, was the culmination of the summer scholarship program. It was sponsored by Mr. and Mrs. Richard Perryman, who are longtime supporters of NTCC.

“It is so much fun to bring everyone together at the end of the program to celebrate another successful year of Work4College. It is a special moment when students get to meet the donors who provided their scholarships and thank them in person,” Mason May, Work4College Director, said.

Work4College students are part of a unique, privately-funded scholarship program that allows them to work part-time on campus. Half of their $15 per-hour earned pay is distributed through a paycheck and the rest is banked into a scholarship fund that they can use to pay for future NTCC classes. Participants also take a class that teaches financial literacy, life skills and community service.

“One of the things that makes Work4College so special is that so many people are responsible for its tremendous success. From the donors who generously provide the scholarships, to the supervisors who train and mentor, to the students out there putting in the hours – it is truly a team effort,” May said.

This marks the ninth year of the program. Work4College started in 2014 with only 15 students and has grown to about 90 students this summer. In addition to students working at the college, Chapel Hill, Winnsboro, Harts Bluff, and Como-Pickton schools all had Work4College students on their campuses. Each consecutive year more students and schools have expressed an interest in participating.

“We really can’t stress enough how much we appreciate those who support Work4College. From private donors to charitable groups like the Texas Pioneer Foundation and the Greater Texas Foundation, we couldn’t make this happen without them,” Dr. Jonathan McCullough, NTCC Executive Vice President for Advancement, said.
