Navarro defeats Alvin 5-0 in game one

After being delayed for a day due to rain, the NJCAA Region XIV Baseball Tournament kicked off on Sunday morning at Northeast Texas Community College in Mount Pleasant. Navarro College defeated Alvin Community College 5-0 in the first match up.

Navarro?s Chad Young pitched nine innings for the win, allowing no runs on four hits and an impressive 13 strikeouts.

Navarro?s offense was led by Brode Boyd?s hitting. He went 2-4, drove in one and scored one run. He tripled in the seventh inning and singled in the eighth. Kaleb Goodell and Tyler Wilson also had two hits apiece for Navarro. Jake Sutton, Weston Hall and Brett Doe each had one hit for Navarro.

Alvin?s Scott Zimmerle pitched the loss with 6.2 innings pitched. He gave up eight hits, four runs, walked one and struck out three. AJ Flores closed for Alvin, pitching 1.1 innings. Flores gave up one hit, one run and walked two.

Offensively, Travis Laird led for Alvin with two hits. James Cantu and Cole Coakley had one apiece.

Navarro took the lead after the first inning when a run was scored on an RBI single by Tyler Wilson. The second run came in the sixth when Navarro scored on a sacrifice fly by Ryan Ford that scored Kaleb Goodell.

Navarro added two runs in the seventh. Things kicked off with Boyd?s triple, which scored Colton Besett. Doe followed with a double, plating Boyd.

The final run was scored in the seventh, ending the game 5-0 in favor of Navarro.

Navarro will play again on Monday at 5 p.m. They will face the winner of the San Jacinto College in the winner's bracket. Alvin will play Paris Junior College at 10 a.m. on Sunday.
