Eagles softball wins a pair, drops four

The Eagles softball squad picked up their first two conference wins of the season against Lon Morris last week before dropping double headers to Trinity Valley and UT Tyler.

The Eagles wasted no time taking a big lead against Lon Morris in the opening game of their double header as NTCC scored four runs in the bottom of the opening inning. Erica Graham brought in the first run with an RBI single to left and Christina Martin brought in two more runs with a single to center moments later. Jacki Smith drove in the final run of the inning with a two-out double to left that brought home Martin.

The Eagles added two more runs in the bottom of the third inning as Graham led off with a single and later scored as Katie Holcomb hit a shot over the left-field fence for a two-run home run.

Graham got things started again in the bottom of the fifth inning, leading off with a walk before later scoring on a double to left by Holcomb. Holcomb stole second and then scored on a single to left by Smith that put the Eagles up 8-0, ending the game via the run rule.

Hannah Holovach picked up her 11th†win of the season in the pitcher?s circle for the Eagles with her complete-game, shutout performance.

The Eagles again took a quick lead in the first inning of the second game with Lon Morris, scoring one as Kix Hutchins led off with an infield single and later scored on an error.

Smith was hit by a pitch in the bottom of the second and later scored to give NTCC a 2-0 lead before Lon Morris scored one in the top of the fourth to cut the Eagle lead to 2-1.

The Eagles scored the final two runs of the game in the bottom of the fifth as Adoria Askew led off with a home run to left field. Graham followed with a double and later scored on a double to left by Ashley Basham.

Amanda Shirley picked up the win for the Eagles in the pitchers circle as NTCC improved to 2-2 in conference action.†The Eagles fell to 2-4 in conference Saturday as they dropped a pair to visiting Trinity Valley.

Holovach was 2-3 with a home run and two RBI for the Eagles in game one of the double header but it wasn?t enough as Trinity Valley picked up a 6-3 victory. The NTCC offense never got going in the second game of the day as the Eagles fell again, this time 2-1.

Two hits and and RBI from Holcomb were not enough for the Eagles to get a win in game one against UT Tyler Monday as NTCC fell 9-4.

The Eagles led 2-1 after two innings of play but UT Tyler bounced back with two runs in the third inning to go up 3-2. The Eagles added runs in the fourth and fifth innings to grab a 4-3 advantage but UT Tyler put the game away with five runs in the bottom of the fifth and one more in the sixth en route to the win.

Things were much closer in game two as the Eagles erased an early two-run deficit only to see the Lady Patriots win on a walk-off hit in the bottom of the seventh.

The Eagles jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning but the Lady Patriots answered with three in the bottom of the inning to go up 3-1. The Eagles cut the lead to one with a run in the top of the second but UT Tyler answered with one in the bottom of the third to go up 4-2.

A two-run home run by Jessica Garza tied the game at 4-4 in the fourth but the lady Patriots scored one in the fifth to take a 5-4 lead.

The Eagles again tied the scored in the top of the seventh as Shelby ?Charlotte? Sorrels led off with a single and later scored on an error.

The Lady Patriots used a leadoff walk, a sacrifice bunt and a single to get the run they needed in the bottom of the seventh as UT Tyler came away with a 6-5 victory.

The Lady Eagles are scheduled to continue conference play Wednesday at Texarkana, weather permitting.
