Communities In Schools (CIS) Northeast Texas held its annual CAPPED event at Northeast Texas Community College on Wednesday, April 17th. About 275 seniors from area high schools spent a half-day touring campus and learning about the programs and opportunities available at NTCC. Schools that participated include: Chapel Hill, Clarksville, Daingerfield, Harts Bluff, Mount Pleasant, Mount Vernon, Pewitt, Pittsburg, Rivercrest and Sulphur Springs.
The program is designed to give seniors who are undecided about their post-secondary plans a chance to explore options that they might not have previously considered. Attendees were broken into small groups where they toured the campus, learned about financial aid, scholarships, students clubs and more.
In a thank-you note to CIS, one teacher who attended CAPPED with their students commented: "I had one student who rarely says a word come up to me with a big smile and say, "I'm going to be here this time next year!"
NTCC faculty members gave interactive presentations on their programs of study. Programs that participated were: Agriculture, Auto Body Repair, Business Management/Logistics, Computer Technology and Cyber Security, Cosmetology, Criminal Justice, Culinary Arts, Financial Literacy, Industrial/Electrical Technology, Welding, Emergency Medical Services, Medical Assistant/Healthcare Management, Medical Lab Technology/Health Studies/Community Health, Nursing/Patient Care Technology, Physical Therapist Assistant and Continuing Education programs.
The day also included a fun tailgating party, games and a keynote address.
“We are so grateful for everyone who pulled together to make CAPPED a success. We appreciate the schools for sending students and all of the volunteers it took to make an event of this magnitude happen. It was one of our best years yet,” Billi Jo Thomas, Associate Dean of Outreach Services, said.
CIS is a grant-funded organization that helps at-risk students overcome barriers to success from K-12 through college. They have employees in 45 schools throughout the area and reach over 19,000 young people through a variety of services and activities.
