Christi Denney (left) recently presented Nita May, Director of Development with the Northeast Texas Community College Foundation, with $2,000 to support the Nita DeWoody Memorial Scholarship fund. Multiple donations were received to contribute to the scholarship in memory of JW Hooper, father of Denney and DeWoody, who passed away in 2023.

“Sadly, we lost our father as well this year. The family is very appreciative of those who gave memorial gifts to honor our dad and keep Nita’s scholarship fund going,” Denney said.

The funds provide three scholarships for non-traditional NTCC students already enrolled in the NTCC Associate Degree Nursing (ADN), Licensed Vocational Nursing (LVN) or Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA) program.  Denney is pictured (right) presenting the gift to Nita May, NTCC Director of Development.

“Education was very important to Nita. She began her career as a public school teacher. After her children were born, she returned to the classroom for a short while, but decided that her goals had shifted and she wanted to change careers. While preparing to enter the Physician Assistant program at UT-Southwestern in Irving, she attended NTCC to take all the pre-requisite math and science classes that she needed,” Denney said.

In the past, funds for this scholarship were raised through the Nita DeWoody Memorial 5K run.
