Northeast Texas Community College’s own Dr. Andrew Daniel will be joined by two members of his family for an instrumental trio performance on Sunday, Oct. 23rd at 2:30 p.m. at the Whatley Center for the Performing Arts. Daniel, NTCC Professor of Music, will play guitar while his son, André Daniel, performs the violin, and his mother, Sherry Daniel, accompanies on piano.
The program will consist of music for guitar, violin and piano including works by Prokofiev, the Cuban composer Leo Brouwer, the great jazz master Charlie Bryd, along with Celtic jigs and reels. Also on the program is a piece by David Leisner called “Dance in a Madhouse.” This work for violin and guitar depicts four scenes from the lithograph by George Bellows of the same name.
Guitarist Dr. Andrew Daniel, an Honors Seminar Professor, earned his D.M.A. from the University of North Texas. Two of his seminar students have recently won Boe Awards of the Great Plains Honors Council for their essays involving music. After completing his Master of Music degree from the University of Southern California, he was offered a European tour under the auspices of the Andres Segovia Institute. That 1992 tour morphed into a decade long European adventure. Daniel has been on the faculty of NTCC since 2002 and is currently the Division Chair for Creative and Performing Arts.
André Daniel, officially the youngest student ever on the NTCC campus when he played in the instrumental ensemble (he was only 7 years old and had already been playing violin for 4 years). He played on the Whatley stage in a talent show when he was 8 and he gave his first full recital on campus where we bussed his second-grade class over from Chapel Hill for the performance. Since that time, André earned numerous awards and accolades, including an invitation to perform with the National Youth Orchestra, a full scholarship to the prestigious Interlochen Music Festival, and many more. Currently he is a junior at UNT studying violin performance where he is in the Quartet Program and the recipient of scholarships that cover all expenses for the duration of the Bachelor of Music Degree.
After a career as a Pathology Laboratory supervisor, Sherry Daniel
returned to school and completed her Bachelor of Music degree at UT Arlington. Sherry has served on many non-profit boards, including Dallas Chamber Music Society and Walden Chamber Music Society. She is currently a board member of Mount Vernon Music Association and is active in educational outreach. She maintains a private piano studio and teaches continuing education at Northeast Texas Community College. Sherry and her husband, Clif, have retired from the metroplex and live on a cattle ranch in Titus County where they enjoy playing with grandchildren, training their Bernese Mountain Dogs, reading, and of course, music!
