Northeast Texas Community College faculty member Carmen Shurtleff was featured as a speaker at the TAFE Area 6 2026 Fall Workshop on September 23 at the Region 8 Education Service Center.
A Mt. Pleasant High School graduate, Shurtleff earned both her Bachelor of Social Work and Master of Social Work degrees and currently serves as a full-time faculty member at NTCC, where she teaches courses in Sociology and Social Work.
During her presentation, Shurtleff shared insights from her work in higher education and discussed the growing need to address students’ basic needs—particularly in rural community college settings. Her work focuses on developing holistic support systems that can help improve student outcomes.
Shurtleff is also the author of “From Food Pantry to Care Center in a Rural College: Our Journey,”published in New Directions for Community Colleges in 2024.
