The Northeast Texas Community College Board of Trustees got a firsthand look at the technology helping prepare students for healthcare careers during its regular October meeting.

Trustees began with a tour of the Health Science Simulation (SIM) Center, led by Director Connie Lindsay. Opened in 2023, the center features state-of-the-art simulation manikins that allow students to practice skills ranging from drawing blood to delivering a baby.

Lindsay also demonstrated the new Anatomage table, which uses imagery from actual human cadavers to provide an interactive look at human anatomy. All NTCC health science programs use the SIM Center, and nearly all of its equipment has been purchased through grant funding.

During his President’s Report, Dr. Kevin Rose announced that NTCC’s final state appropriations totaled $7.79 million, approximately $130,000 more than initially projected.

Rose also highlighted several recent successful events, including Scare Affair, which drew an estimated 800 to 1,000 guests, The Texas Tenors concert, the college rodeo and NTCC Golf Tournament. He also recognized student Adam Richards, who was recently named to the Great Plains Honors Council. The NTCC Foundation reported $131,975 in giving for September.

In other reports, Dean of Workforce Jimmy Smith announced that NTCC received $293,977 in Perkins Grant funding to support workforce and health science programs. Vice President for Student Services Kim Irvin reported that average annual tuition and fees at NTCC are $3,918, compared with $4,214 at other Texas public two-year colleges and $4,968 nationally.

Trustees approved a $458,366 budget amendment for a new roof on the Business Technology (BT) building and an Ag Center temporary housing contingency project. S&S Roofing was awarded the BT roof project with a bid of $374,716.

The Board also approved minor adjustments to health science special course fees, hired Stephanie Garcia as a College Navigator and released a College Connection Coach from their contract.

All trustees were present. The Board did not hold an executive session.
