The Northeast Texas Community College Eagle newspaper staff recently attended the Texas Intercollegiate Press Association (TIPA) conference at the Crowne Plaza hotel in Dallas. Students attended sessions on various journalism topics, participated in live contest events and attended the annual TIPA awards banquet.

NTCC won Overall Excellence Division 6 in both the newspaper and literary magazine categories. In total, the students won 47 awards, including several first-place awards for photography, writing and design. Chelsey Elrod won second place in the live feature photography contest, which includes students from colleges and universities of all sizes.

?I am so proud of our Eagle newspaper staff. A lot of work goes into putting out a campus newspaper and this is really the culmination of that hard work,? Mandy Smith, advisor to The Eagle, said. ?It has always been a goal of mine to win an Overall Excellence award and this group of students achieved that in two categories. This is an unprecedented honor for NTCC and our staff really represented us well.?

Around 500 students from two and four-year colleges from across Texas attended the event. To learn more about the journalism program at NTCC, contact Smith at 903-434-8254 or msmith@ntcc.edu.
